The UC Irvine Libraries are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Thuy Vo Dang as archivist for the internationally recognized Southeast Asian Archive and Regional History in Special Collections and Archives. Dr. Vo Dang begins her appointment on August 1.
“Thuy is a true scholar-archivist hybrid,” said Audra Eagle Yun, Head of Special Collections and Archives. “Her passion for documentation and expertise about the communities of the Orange County region have prepared her well to develop archival and general collections for the Southeast Asian Archive and Special Collections and Archives. We are delighted to have Thuy join the UCI Libraries to help enhance our collections and services.”
Since 2011, Vo Dang has served as the Project Director for the Vietnamese American Oral History Project at UCI where she coordinated outreach, marketing, recording, processing, preservation, and dissemination of the digital archive, a collaboration between the School of Humanities and the Department of Asian American Studies with the UCI Libraries.
“My partnership with the UCI Libraries these past two years has inspired and strengthened my commitment to developing and maintaining collections at the cutting edge of academic research in collaboration with the diverse communities we serve,” said Vo Dang. “I am thrilled to take on the role of Archivist for the Southeast Asian Archive and Regional History and to be part of the Special Collections & Archives team.”
Vo Dang has a B.A. in Asian American Studies and English from Scripps College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies from the University of California, San Diego, where she specialized in race and ethnicity, oral history, cultural studies, immigration and refugee studies, community studies, and Asian American studies. She also has teaching experience at UCI, UCLA, UCSD, and Loyola Marymount University, and is a member of the Association for Asian American Studies, the American Studies Association, and the Southwest Oral History Association. She serves on a number of community non-profit boards, including Horizon Cross-Cultural Center and the Vietnamese American Arts and Letters Association.
Originally planned as a temporary archivist position, strong community enthusiasm inspired the Libraries to create a permanent archivist position to meet the needs of the Southeast Asian Archive and Orange County regional collections. The first year of the position will be devoted to the Southeast Asian Archive, thanks to a fundraising initiative by the Vietnamese American Community Ambassadors (VACA), a chapter of the UC Irvine Alumni Association. The two year initiative featured generous financial support from Wells Fargo Bank, members of VACA, former members of Project Ngoc, as well as the community, with a joint commitment from UCI Chancellor Michael Drake. After the first year, responsibilities for the position will expand to include managing regional history collections in the Special Collections & Archives Department and in the general UCI Libraries’ collection.
